The redevelopment of Ede-Wageningen Station represents a key moment in reshaping regional mobility infrastructure in the Netherlands. As part of the broader transformation of the station area, this creative study focuses on the design of the main entrance, conceived as both a functional transit hub and a spatial gateway to the city.
The design envisions a clearly defined, welcoming threshold that harmonizes with the architectural language of the new station while reinforcing the pedestrian axis that links train platforms, bicycle routes, and the surrounding urban fabric. Layered planting, warm material palettes, and a subtle modulation of levels create a spatial rhythm that guides movement while offering moments of pause.
Blending landscape architecture and visualization, the proposal distills technical precision and atmospheric quality into a coherent public space. The entrance functions not only as infrastructure but also as a civic gesture, one that anchors the station within its ecological and social context.
The station forecourt is shaped as a transitional landscape, guiding movement while offering spatial clarity and rhythm. Vegetation is strategically placed to define pedestrian flows, with a planted offset of two meters marking circulation edges. Within this frame, low grasses and scattered trees support intuitive wayfinding through open sightlines. A distinct hierarchy of materials differentiates the paved route from surrounding green zones. A gravel buffer, mirroring the textures of the nearby park, creates a soft transition between built and planted surfaces. To enrich the arrival experience, sun-facing steps offer informal seating near the entrance, complemented by a covered cafeteria designed as a welcoming social node.

The planting palette combines structure, softness, and seasonal rhythm to support both visual orientation and ecological layering. Light, aromatic underplantings emerge early in the season, weaving through grasses and accenting circulation zones with subtle motion and scent. Mid-height perennials and textural shrubs create transitional edges, softening hardscapes and providing contrast through shifting tones of silver, violet, and green. Taller species mark key points in the layout, offering seasonal blooms and autumnal highlights, while evergreen silhouettes anchor the space year-round with quiet permanence. Together, the composition frames movement, fosters biodiversity, and responds to the microclimatic variation of the site.
Custom scripts were developed to manage the complexity and variation of paving and material transitions across the site. These tools allowed us to define spatial logic not just by geometry, but by rhythm, texture, and hierarchy. For the pavement, a script generated patterns responsive to circulation flows, edge conditions, and material thresholds, ensuring visual continuity while allowing controlled irregularity. A separate tool was created to design and distribute brick bond variations, adapting to architectural boundaries and landscape interfaces with precision. This scripted approach ensured both flexibility and consistency, enabling a material language that remains coherent at every scale.
